Unveiling the e7D-Movement Module: Addressing the Mental and Physical Health Crisis Among Health Care Professionals
Health care professionals worldwide are currently facing an urgent and escalating mental health crisis. The COVID-19 pandemic and workplace violence have significantly compounded the already challenging nature of their work. The global prevalence of mental health problems among healthcare workers during the pandemic is indeed alarming, with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) being the most common issue, followed by anxiety, depression, and distress. This underscores the immediate need for appropriate management strategies to treat and prevent these mental health disorders (Saragih et al., 2021). Additionally, workplace violence is a prevalent issue, with 61.9% of healthcare workers reporting exposure to some form of violence. Non-physical violence affects 42.5% of workers, while 24.4% face physical violence annually. Verbal abuse is the most common type of non-physical violence, followed by threats and sexual harassment. The prevalence of workplace violence is notably higher in Asian and North American countries, particularly in psychiatric and emergency departments and among nurses and physicians (Liu et al., 2019).
Stress accumulates in the muscles and profoundly affects all body systems, including the musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, nervous, and reproductive systems (American Psychological Association, 2023). Staying fit and building muscle mass is not just crucial, it's empowering in combating these issues. Enhanced physical fitness and muscle strength play a crucial role in preventing injuries and managing the physical demands of patient handling and prolonged awkward postures more effectively. Regular exercise and strength training not only bolster physical health but also promote mental well-being, further equipping healthcare workers to cope with the high-stress environment of their profession.
Enhanced Physical Resilience: Health care professionals often face physically demanding tasks, from patient handling to prolonged periods of standing. Following exercise routines for medical professionals and adhering to physical activity guidelines for healthcare workers can significantly enhance muscle strength and endurance. This increased physical resilience helps reduce the risk of injuries, supports better posture, and alleviates strain on vulnerable areas such as the neck, lower back, and shoulders.
Prevention of Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WRMSDs): Healthcare workers are at a high risk of developing WRMSDs due to repetitive movements and awkward postures. Integrating movement breaks during medical shifts and following a structured fitness regimen, including cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and flexibility exercises, can prevent these disorders. The holistic approach advocated by the CHEK Institute emphasises the importance of functional anatomy and the interconnectedness of body systems, ensuring that health care professionals maintain overall physical health and reduce the likelihood of musculoskeletal issues.
Improved Mental Wellbeing:
Regular physical activity, including stretching exercises for nurses and doctors, is not just crucial; it is a testament to the value we place on our mental health. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters and help manage stress, anxiety, and depression. Given the high-stress environment of healthcare settings, incorporating fitness tips for busy healthcare staff can improve mental wellbeing, making it easier for professionals to cope with the pressures of their jobs. This emphasis on mental wellbeing reflects the care and value we place on the health of healthcare professionals.
These reasons underscore the importance of staying fit and physically strong for health care professionals, not just for their physical health but also for their mental wellbeing and overall job performance.
